# Customer tags & columns

A column in the price list is a Shopify **customer tag**. Tag a customer, and they get that column's pricing.

## Adding a column

In the price list editor choose **Add column**, then fill in:

* **Tag name** — the Shopify customer tag, spelled exactly.
* **Discount title (optional)** — the label on the checkout discount line for this tag. Falls back to the price list's default title.
* **Loose discount title (optional)** — the label used for the separate discount line that leftover loose units generate. See [Progressive case multiples](/dollarlabs-b2b-custom-pricing/getting-started/progressive-case-multiples-and-loose-unit-pricing.md).

Then **Add & configure**.

## Getting the name right

This is the single most common setup mistake.

* **Case matters.** `Wholesale` ≠ `wholesale` ≠ `WHOLESALE`.
* **Whitespace matters.** A trailing space in either place breaks the match.
* Copy the tag from the Shopify customer record rather than retyping it.

To check, open a customer in Shopify admin who should be getting wholesale pricing, and compare their tag against your column header character by character.

## The Default column

Alongside your tags there is a **Default** column. Pricing there applies to **every** customer, signed in or not, tagged or not.

Use it for a genuine storewide price. Do not use it as a staging area — because [the lowest price wins](/dollarlabs-b2b-custom-pricing/getting-started/how-pricing-works.md), a Default price below your wholesale prices becomes everyone's price.

## Per-tag settings

Open a tag's settings from its column header to reach more than the titles.

### Discount titles

**Discount title** and **Loose discount title** control the text buyers see against the discount at checkout and on the order. Set something recognisable — buyers do ask what a line called "Discount" is.

### Payment and delivery method rules

Each tag can carry its own rules that decide *whether* its pricing applies, based on how the buyer is paying, how they are shipping, and how large the cart is.

This is how you build things like "distributor pricing only on orders over $500" or "this price only when paying on account". The rules are covered in full in [Payment & delivery rules](/dollarlabs-b2b-custom-pricing/price-list/payment-and-delivery-rules.md).

Rules set on a tag apply to that tag only. The equivalent rules in [price list settings](/dollarlabs-b2b-custom-pricing/price-list/price-list-settings.md) apply across the price list.

## Removing a column

Removing a tag column removes that tag's pricing for every variant. There is no undo — [export a CSV](/dollarlabs-b2b-custom-pricing/price-list/csv-import-and-export.md) first if you might want it back.

Removing the column does not touch the tag on your customers in Shopify; they simply stop getting a price from it.

## How many columns?

There is no fixed limit, and the grid and CSV handle a large number of tags. But every column is a column you have to maintain on every import, so keep them to segments that genuinely price differently.

If two tags always have identical prices, use one tag and apply it to both groups of customers.
