# Non purchase earn rules

Purchase rewards are just one way to reward your customers. Dollarback also supports several engagement-based earn rules that let customers earn store credit by completing specific actions, helping you encourage loyalty beyond purchases.

### Birthday Rewards

Birthday rewards let you automatically gift store credit to customers on their birthday.

#### How it works

Customers enter their birthday through your storefront widget or customer portal. Once eligible, Dollarback automatically credits their account.

You can choose whether the reward is issued:

* On the customer's exact birthday
* During their birthday month

#### Cooldown period

To prevent abuse, you can configure a **cooldown period** after a customer submits their birthday.

For example, if you set a 30-day cooldown, customers who add their birthday today won't immediately receive the reward if their birthday falls within the next 30 days. Instead, they'll receive it on their next eligible birthday.

This prevents customers from entering a birthday shortly before the reward date simply to claim the credit.

#### Reward eligibility

If you're **not using Customer Tiers**, you can restrict birthday rewards using customer tags through the Eligibility section.

If **Customer Tiers are enabled**, eligibility is managed entirely through your tier configuration, so the eligibility settings inside the earn rule are hidden.

#### Credit expiry

You can optionally set an expiry date for birthday rewards.

Adding an expiry encourages customers to return and redeem their credit instead of saving it indefinitely.

### Social Follow Rewards

Reward customers for completing social engagement activities such as:

* Following your Instagram account
* Joining your Facebook page
* Visiting a promotional page
* Sharing a campaign link
* Any custom URL-based activity

#### How it works

Each social reward generates a unique link that you can place anywhere:

* Your storefront
* Emails
* Landing pages
* Blog posts
* Marketing campaigns

When customers click the link, log in, and complete the activity, they receive the configured store credit reward.

#### Verification

Most social platforms do not expose APIs that allow apps to verify whether a customer actually completed actions like following an account or liking a page.

Because of this, social rewards operate on an **honor system**. Once the customer confirms they've completed the activity, Dollarback awards the configured store credit.

For this reason, social rewards are generally best suited for smaller incentive amounts.

### Sign-up Bonus

Welcome new customers by automatically rewarding them when they create an account.

When a customer signs up and logs into your store for the first time, Dollarback can automatically issue a welcome bonus as store credit.

Only **one sign-up bonus** can exist per store, ensuring customers receive the reward only once.

***

### Newsletter Rewards

Encourage email list growth by rewarding customers for subscribing to your newsletter.

Once a customer successfully subscribes, Dollarback automatically credits their account with the configured reward amount.

This is a simple way to increase newsletter subscriptions while giving customers an immediate incentive to engage with your brand.

### Custom API Rewards

For completely custom earning experiences, you can reward customers using the Dollarback API.

This allows your own applications, storefronts, or third-party systems to issue store credit whenever a customer completes an action outside the standard earn rules.

Some common use cases include:

* Contest or sweepstakes participation
* Completing a survey
* Attending an event
* Joining a VIP program
* Referral campaigns
* Completing onboarding steps
* Custom marketing campaigns
* Any proprietary business workflow

Because rewards are issued through the API, you have complete control over when and why customers receive store credit.

For implementation details, see the **Developer API** documentation.

### How Customers See These Rewards

All active earn rules automatically appear in the customer rewards widget.

Customers can easily see:

* Available rewards they can still complete
* Rewards they've already claimed
* Rewards that are no longer available to them

For example:

* A completed birthday reward will show as already claimed.
* A social follow reward disappears once it has been redeemed.
* Newsletter and sign-up rewards are only available until completed.

This gives customers a clear overview of every opportunity they have to earn store credit while encouraging continued engagement with your store.
